So, he PM'd me asking to build up a 12" sub for him. We opted for the D2.8 coil and the last of my old school American made OEM shocker cones and dustcaps. Went with a somewhat soft suspension since he's only going to be running 1200W or so (though I've successfully ran this 2 spider pack on a little more than 2K without issue).

Low carbon steel tarnishes fast so the motor was a bit ugly. Took a trip to the part's store and got some 220 and 400 grit paper and some nice metal polish.

Bottom of the back-plate was pretty hazy from the 400 grit so back to the part's store for some 600 and 800

Much nicer.

I pretty much used up the time I budgeted for what he spent on me polishing. Bottom and top are really nice, the sides of the top plate could use another hour of rag and polish.

I like to test fit the coil in the gap and mark where to glue the spider. For some reason the coil wasn't sliding down.... turns out the last owner left me a surprise. About a quarter of a coil slinky'd up wedged down at the bottom..... no fun to extract from such a tight gap, but luckily I picked up a set of Snap-On pick tools last year so I could fish the old coil out with the little hooked tool.

Coil glued up to spiders.

Coil shimmed up and spider glued to landing, ready to solder leads.

Soldered and trimmed.

Cone in place and coil leads soldered. I must say it's a tragedy that you cheap f*cks let the American parts manufacturers go out of business. These old American made cones are far nicer to work with than the stuff those Chinese kids are making today.

I always glue surround down first. This next step IMO is crucial to building up the small gaps.

4 drops of glue at 9, 12, 3, and 6 O'clock. From here I can pull the shims and test that the coil is perfectly aligned. If it's slightly cockeyed in the gap I just break the drop of glue on that side and move the coil a little bit to center.

I find that many thin beads of glue is superior to just hosing it in all at once.

3 layers of glue here. This triple joint will be the last thing to break.

Notice these surrounds aren't notched. In Arab cultures it is important to know your girl is a virgin before taking here home.

Looking good. I still think about having you build one of these for me. One day I need to quit being cheap and take the plunge
You think? I'm pretty much giving them away right now with the price I bought my last motors.

Whooooooo! I gotta say, I'm more than happy with this whole experience. Got it done quicker than I expected with great communication, sending me updates during the build. Also spent a good deal of time just answering all my questions with great detail and showing me various options, before I decided to purchase. And I feel the pricing was more than fair.

Would definitely go this route again....now lets see that crate!

I have to say I got really excited for this one myself when I started getting into shining the motor and you picked the old school cone. I really screwed the pooch not buying more of those cones when they were still around.

Here's hoping this box is solid enough to survive FedEx from Maine to SoCal.
