Item(s) Description/Condition:

When I really got into researching old Alpine car audio gear a couple of years ago I came across this unit and I knew I had to have it. The oversized faceplate is really different and the big display makes it nicer to tune your active setup. It has different screen saver effects as well if you like that sort of thing. You can also turn on Blackout mode which shuts the screen off after a few seconds.

I ran this in my car for quite a while and I tested it on my bench again after I removed it. FM radio works fine. I tested the front and rear RCA pre-outs. In the past I used all 3 sets of pre-outs as a 3-way active system. The CD player works but there's a scratchy sound that develops at random. I never heard the noise with the radio playing, with a CD changer connected and playing, or with a KCA-410c Versatile Link adapter for inputs. Maybe you know how to fix it but I didn't dare to disassemble the unit to look for the problem.

I will be listing my Versatile Link adapter for sale after I remove it from my car, as well as a CHA-1214 12-disc changer and a CHA-S634 6-disc MP3 changer, Ai-Net cables and other goodies as I get around to it. The 12-disc changer with the 7998 is sweet because the 7998 has enough buttons on the face to directly select all 12 discs.

Bummer, and Alpine no longer repairs these if there was a problem.

The transport is only shared by this unit and the other 1.5din non bio lite display deck. You might be able to send it to an Alpine authorized repair place to see if you can get the transport inspected.

Hell of a unit, I had 4 of these 2 of wich I bought brand new back in the day!

GLWS!

The scratching sound you're hearing may be due to the crossovers set with the levels too high. Some of the older Alpines had a tendency to do that when set up to run a 3 way setup. My 9855 does. The solution is to turn down the level on the HU and slightly increase the gain on the amplifier to make up for the slight lack of output on the HU. That being said, GLWS. I always wanted one of these...

I'm hoping to find someone who might be able to repair this head unit. The faceplate doesn't slide out at all.
