if i'm running around 2,000W RMS how small of an alternator can i get away with?

my stock one is 80amps which is definitely too small.

would a 150amp be enough? can't seem to find anything bigger for my car (99 accord 2.3L I4)

thoughts?

I used a power acoustik a3000db on my stock 130 amp alternator and i never saw the voltage drop below 11.8
on my 80 amp alternator it goes below 11.4V during the bassline of young jeezy - thug motivation (about 30 seconds long, but the voltage stops dropping after about 20 seconds).

i'd definitely like to keep it about 12V at all times (to not stress the battery).

considering your car comes stock with a 130 amp i assume it draws more power, so maybe i could get away with a 150 amp.

from what i understand, the math is 10 amps per 100 watts, so you would need approximately 200 amps?
interesting rule of thumb, seems a bit overly safe, and it doesn't take into consideration the car's normal current draw.

the rule i read somewhere is:

stock alternator divided by 2

added to amp's power divided by 14.4 divided by two

example:

80 / 2 = 40 amps

2000 / 14.4 / 2 = 70 amps

70 + 40 = 110 amps

but that seems a bit too risky (assuming car only draws half of the current that the stock alt can put out, and that the amp is 100% efficient and only draws half of that)

i guess it's more for a "daily use" number, ie. the bare minimum.

any thoughts on the amp i linked to?

local shop quoted me ~$250 and 2-3 weeks turnaround to get my alt rewound to 140 amps (he didn't suggest going any higher). but i can't go that long without a car.

2-3 weeks? Is your local shop sending it out to someone to get it rebuilt? Most local shops should be able to do it the same day if you drop it off first thing in the morning.

Have you also tried to contact Iraggi alternators, Excessive Amperage, or http://www.ohiogen.com ?

yeah, it's a send out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

i haven't contacted any of those, i'll look into it.

seems like most HO alt companies stick to domestics and the import cars cost a a bit more.

i did contact knu a while back, but i don't remember what i was quoted. i remember thinking it was a lot at the time.

contact http://www.ohiogen.com and see if there is a dealer near you. If not then Moe Lester is an ohio gen dealer that could help you out. Thier alternators are generally some of the more expensive ones on the market.

The one you have in your first post seems like it is a pretty good deal. 150amp should be plenty provided your battery is healthy. Have you done a search on the forum to see what other brands might be available for you to contact?

Oh and I would have usually mentioned just buying a junk alternator from a local salvage yard and sending that in to get rebuilt. The only problem is that the stock Honda case may only allow it to max out at 150amp, and in the end it would probably cost you just as much as buying that one in your first post.

You just found your own solution. Move the DSP elsewhere. The RCA is triple protected but not the RCA plugs. I do not know if there is a mesh or...

What the ****? Are you trying to put ohm's law into very complicated verbiage?
