is rms wattage real or a made up number by manufactures

I am looking at speakers an I hear Boston Accoustics are better than lets say alpine type s for example yet ba puts out 40 rms and alpine 80rms but people say basquality is better and true rms wattage where as alpines is not is this true.

Short answer: The rms of a speaker has nothing to do with the quality of the speaker.

Just because a speaker can handle more power doesn't make it better. Higher rms doesn't provide better sound quality, midbass, etc etc...it simply means the speaker is built with parts that can handle more power. What it does with the power is what is important. Personally I would rather have a speaker that's more effecient with lower power and provides a nice sound versus a speaker I can throw 200 watts at and sound like crap.

I really completely ignore power ratings on all of my speakers when choosing them. Music is too dynamic and chances are they'll never see however much power u run them on anyway. Also companies probably derive these rms ratings through different methods so they're not uniform which makes them pretty useless IMO. I have given speakers 4x their rms without an issue. I have given speakers less than half of their rms and still sounded good. Focus on the better sounding driver that suits your needs over rms ratings. They really don't tell u much of anything.

I used to have diamond audio hex s600, they were rated 150 rms, now I have arc audo fd5ks,

Both got 200 rms, both sounded great. Difference was midbass and xover. If you set your hpf at around 1,00hz you can usually run more power to a speaker.

I assume u mean 100hz.. Cause a mid crossed at 1k is well leaving alot of unplayed freq.
