KICKER Hideaway 8" Powered Sub

I bought a Kicker Hideaway 8" sub to complement my system with just a little bit more bass. I was wondering what opinions I could get involving the hook up of the sub. It gives the option of a hi-level or low-level connection (additional cable). I was wondering if the Hi-level connection could be made at my amp or should it be run to the head unit (Kenwood DNX6140). Also, there is a bass control remote that came included but when it's plugged in, the whole system sounds like it's going to explode... WTF? HELP!!!!!
