Solidworks...

Where can i get a copy of solidworks wether it be a torrent or to buy. I am a college student but my school wont let me get a copy unless I am taking certain classes so thats pretty much out. I am trying to build an amp rack for my truck and this is actually getting pretty difficult by hand.

The only reason it needs to be solidworks is because that is the program I am good at (engineering class taught) so thats why I wanted to use that. All I really need is a 3d design software that I can rotate designs and see 3 d views. I like solidworks just because I know how to use the tools in it.

If you can find a local solidworks dealer you can got a personal copy for free.

Google sketchup confuses me... but I also have a full legit copy of solidworks so that may explain why i havent tried to hard at sketchup :p

My first thought would be to check out the kids at your school who have gotten their hands on it or who are in the classes that need it. Either maybe you can find one who hasn't picked it up and can get a copy of it "for themselves" or they may know of a way to get it. I remember back in school if you needed a piece of software there was usually a way to get it and just needed to find the people in the know. Sometimes there were kids who could rip it off the lab computer or something like that, just need to get around the hardware key usually.

I know the mechanical engineers at my school used solidworks and as far as I know they had access to it on their personal computers and such.

x2 on google sketchup being confusing lol. Granted I probably didn't spend enough time with it and didn't really need to use it but wanted to learn it. I can draft up about anything I want in AutoCad in half the time it would take me to learn sketchup and there is never a time I would ever need a fancy 3d rendering for when I actually go to build something.

Go smack your college dean for making you learn solidworks, and only solidworks. Doesn't the engineering department keep up with the current times?

And yes, I know solidworks among several other CAD systems. I drew my avatar in solidworks, in case you think this is just another uninformed opinion.

modeled! Your not working in 2D!!!!

Sorry... techically that bugs me lol I just associated drawing to my junior days when all I do is model now heh.

So if I create a line in the X-Z axis, one in the Y-Z axis, and another in the X-Y axis, Im actually "modeling" the lines?
Semantical post at best.

As I said before... stupid technicality that bugs me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It's a parametric modeling software... thus you are modeling. Though given your example you could say you drew those lines... as long as you dont have any dimensions on them in the sketch...

But your avatar is definitly modeled. (which btw looks good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif)

So adding dimensions to the sketch makes the line 'modeled'? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
Lets just leave it at I molded the model out of intellectual clay and pure personal genius. That rolls off the tongue better anyway.

edit: oh and thankyou. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

And yes it does.

Only 'smart' dimensions make it parametric.
edit: and i'll help your argument.... its not dimensions that would make it a model. You can draw a 3d model that has no specified dimensions. Just start a sketch, draw a closed region, and extrude it. Viola, no dimensions, but a 3d model. What makes a 'model' a 'model' is the computing that goes into creating the solid region. As I said before, old 3d drawing was wire-frames and 2-dimensional surfaces applied to them. They had dimensions, they had 3d aspects to them, but they were not a solid model.

But I still say I drew it, cuz I did it, and thats MY wording. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
