Why not 24 volt??

Well the answer is I don't know?? I have a 6 hp Briggs n Stratton lawn mower motor rigged up to turn the 600 amp catapiller alt running to 2 tractor batts. I am using a boss 5k amp (yeah right) running in 1/2 ohm pushing 4 crappy subs. When I burp it it pulls the moter down a bit but not drastically. We are still having trouble with the voltage staying constant at 15v. It's only a matter of time before I get it right. I think it's gonna work I just want to get it working reliably before I try it on a high current amp. But soon I will have a 600 amp 24 volt alt with little to no ampreage drop under heavy loads.
A 600amp 24v alternator is going to be using quite a lot more than 6hp at full tilt lol. It's around 20hp assuming it's 100% efficient, which it isn't. Your setup should be fine for smaller power though

Well you guys called it the alt pulls the moter down much more than anticipated so much so that the 3.2 v6 in the rodeo has trouble turning it at idle. That with me machining a larger pully to keep the alt at 2600 rpm which is all its rated for . It's fine until u ask it to work then the moter struggles a bit . It does work though ... More to come

It works really good though I think on larger 3/4 ton and up diesel trucks it would be more suitable the 2 apc 1800's strapped at full tilt do not move the voltage more than a 10th when you burp it then it jumps right back up. First time I did it I found out I did not have the drive belt tight enough and shredded the belt lol but I got that fixed. I tried it without the cap and did notice some noise but not as bad as you would think. More to come

I have a few 48 volt Deka forklift batteries, they only weigh about 2800 pounds each //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
That is a bank of probably 2v cells.

Forklift batteries use many cells in series to achieve required voltage.

If you want to talk about heavy batteries, look up Rolls Surrette.
