Hello,

I was told that if I am building a system for the purpose of sound quality competition, I should stay away from class D amplifiers for the subs. I was told that they sacrifice sound quality to achieve their high efficiencies and that they have high distortion and were created exclusively for SPL competitions in which sound quality is not a factor.

Is there any truth to this? How much worse is the sound quality of a class D amp as opposed to a regular amp at the same wattage? Anybody have any comments on this from personal experience or anything?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Class D amps and sub's go hand in hand. Class D do even a little more distortion, but it's so small that you will not hear it at all. Most people cant hear as much distortion as 10% in bass. You won;t hear a change in a class a/b amp vs a class D amp. Class D amps are great for subs because they are highly effcient. I won't go into detail about them, but the reason why they are so effcient deals with the power supply and the rail voltage outputs, it's a different design. Class D can only switch transitors at a low frequency because they don't switch fast enough for the higher pitched sounds, so they make a great small but hugely powerful and cool sub-amp.

Whoever told you that is on crack, don't ever listen to them again! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Have an Xli 2500 as a sub amp in the music room, overkill for sure, never overheats, never skips a beat.
