Decreasing gains increases output?

check the sticky at the top of the amplifiers section, but to answer your question, I believe it should be the opposite

 
I would think that as long as you're not sending a clipped signal to your speakers (setting your gains too high) that when you increase volume (assuming you aren't going clipped on your headunit volume) you are sending clean, unclipped signal to your amp and therefore the output is "better" and not distorted.

That's nothing but an annoyingly common phrase to try to sound smart. Don't say "gain is not a volume knob" until you can explain how it differs...
