Is this a recone?

What about the possibility of it being one of the first production runs of these speakers, and because of that a lot of things were done by hand rather than machine?

I'm still confused as to why one speaker would have the resin applied by a machine, and one would be done by hand..

Well I forgot about this. I bought the woofers because they are rated at 200w RMS hpf @ 100hz, and that's what I used, with the hpf being a little higher as I was watching the woofers move a little too much for what I considered reasonable for a speaker this size crossed at 100hz.

So, is it 160w rms or 200w rms? Still doesn't explain why only one side keeps blowing, but at the same time, if im overpowering them (not my fault, i followed the manufacturers numbers) then i can definitely see the speakers failing.

I'm keeping the brand of the speaker out of the picture until I know what the real problem is here.

I'm 99% sure, when I spoke with who I purchased the speakers from I asked if they could in fact handle the full 200w I intended on giving them and I was informed that they are rated per speaker.

When I get in contact with the manufacturer later today after they look at the pictures I sent, I'll be sure to ask that question. The speakers never distorted when I played them though, so I assumed the 200w I was giving them to be okay.

edit; just pulled off the plastic cone (didnt realize it was only screwed in) and looked down into the voicecoil with a flashlight and it doesn't look clean at all in there... i'm not speaker specialist so i dont know how much dirt is "normal." Could someone tell me if a little dist and debris on the inside of the voice coil is okay? I did see the short occur at those locations..

Hmm, that's what I thought too.. Would it be fair to say that the resin was applied by hand? You said earlier it was probably a different batch, but even then a machine wouldn't make human like mistakes.

Okay, maybe I received two bad speakers then? I asked a couple other people who have used this exact series of speakers and they told me that they should be able to handle the power I'm giving them.

I still don't know about a machine causing resin to be on top of the basket with marks that look like it was from a human using a brush at an angle to apply resin. Not to mention the excess resin overrun in only specific area. I'm going to have to disagree with you, although I respect your opinion. The difference in the way the original factory speaker vs the speaker I received are glued is way too off.

I guess I should mention that this company sells refurbished speakers. There's no way this is a new from factory speaker.

They all say they are in stock but they aren't. Just like my SSA Zcons and Evils were "in stock" but had a super long build time.
