I picked up a single Jl 12w3v3-4ohm with a max rms of 500W at 4ohm and I'm trying to find a good amp for that sub. Budget is $500 or less for amp, I've been looking at the JL jd1000/1, AudioControl LC -1.800, and the JL jd500/1 amplifiers. I am planning to run the sub in a custom ported enclosure. I am aware that the jd1000/1 provides 600rms at 4 ohms and that is 100rms more but I'm unsure if its better to have a more powerful amp turned way down or to have an amp that makes less than the 500rms to not risk having too much power . I do have a strong preference to JL audio and AudioControl but I'm open to other suggestions. The sub only has a single voice coil and I do not plan on running 2 of them so I am locked into 4ohms. Any thoughts on these amps for my specific setup or other amp suggestions

Great deal.

I would consider one of these, they put out more then what they are rated for as well. Tbh while JL amps are nice you over pay for what you get but that is typical of JL.

I would steer clear of the Sundown SFB line. This Sundown SIA will give you 1,250 watts @ 4 ohms.

That lower SFB line is fine I know a couple people running them and have no issues at all. 2 year warranty as well. Tbh I am not impressed with the SIA 3500D at all compared to the half bridge I was running before.

Since you didn't state anything about your box I'm just gonna go with a 500 watt amp. The SSA DM150.2, 500 watts at 4 ohms. On sale for $259.99

Not everybody has room to run big Korean amps. I would rather run Taramps than the SFB line. And I would rather run the SIA line over Taramps. To each his own though.

This isn't a big korean it was the cab-22 and when I have the 500 bucks it will be a cab-45 powering the system and the SIA will get sold. That is one thing I can say I have a bunch of room under where the 3rd seat should go in the explorer. Enough so that I can hide everything in there cleanly still have room leftover for the tools I need there to adjust stuff. Tbh I could even do 5-6 cells of lithium laying down and facing forward with brackets in the one spot if I wanted to there is that much room. I have a Korean Audio Legion/FSD 2500 sitting here that will be getting sold now as well as soon as I get the pictures done later this week. Would do it sooner but 6 inches of snow today and gotta clean out the shed tomorrow & get that snowblower up and going since another storm is coming Friday for another 2-4 inches and Sunday possibly 4-10 inches if it all comes together (hopefully it does!).

Big is a relative word. Too big for under the seat of my truck and not enough watts. My friend just installed 4 wolfram 9K's and 120 cells of Lishen in a two door Blazer. He has plenty of room also. Not to mention his 6 FI 15" custom neos in a sixth order. Some people have room for days.

If you haven't picked up an amp already, don't feel bad if your amp is rated a bit higher than your sub.
You'd be better off with a higher power amp turned down rather than trying to squeeze the maximum out of a smaller amp.
Make sure you know how to set your gains correctly.
All the amps listed will work for your application.

Have an Xli 2500 as a sub amp in the music room, overkill for sure, never overheats, never skips a beat.
